Melissa makes reading exciting and celebrates all achievements. She is able to deliver reading lessons in a way that incorporates physical movement, addresses all 5 domains of reading and includes a writing component. The method in which Melissa delivers reading instruction ensures students have multiple experiences with literacy and in turn this helps with information retention, exposure, and growth.

Melissa is a knowledgeable and skilled instructor of reading who consistently implements research-based practices. Melissa designs rigorous and engaging reading lessons that build phonological awareness, increase fluency, and develop comprehension skills. Melissa follows research-based sequences of instruction that allow students to review and utilize previously learned phonics skills while learning and practicing new content.

Melissa uses her many years of experience to make every moment of instruction engaging and interactive for her students. I've watched her take struggling and reluctant readers and give them the tools to become confident students. Melissa truly has a passion for reading instruction.

Melissa uses various strategies to teach phonics and reading skills. She is very creative and captures students’ attention in reading.

Melissa begins her lessons by reviewing items the students already are familiar with, then follows by introducing the vocabulary and language from the book. She models using a graphic organizer. She goes over sight vocabulary. Students read and practice the focus strategy, then discuss what the book was about or what it includes.Last, students draw a picture or write a sentence about the story. She provides feedback and reviews goals before dismissing students.
